Bringing Children to Jesus
In Jesus’ day it was customary for parents to bring their children to the rabbis, to the spiritual teachers, & ask them to bless their children. After 3 years of public ministry which had clearly evidenced GOD’s power & presence in His life, Jesus was now the One parents brought their children to that He might touch them. This was a visible means of conveying GOD’s blessing on their future lives. Some were infants according to Luke 18:15, which had to be carried, while others were young children who were able to walk. Regardless, they all had to be brought to Jesus, & He welcomed them all. Jesus loves the little children of the world. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked the parents & tried to keep them from bringing their children to Jesus. Why did the disciples behave this way? Well, they probably thought children were unimportant, perhaps a nuisance, & should not distract the Lord because He had more important things to tend to.
