From Making Pots to Breaking Pots - Part 1

Tonight, we get to take a fieldtrip with Jeremiah. GOD is going to direct His servant to a potter’s shop to observe & there give him a message to preach. Now, let me be upfront & inform you that this text is usually misrepresented when it is preached in order to give believers a comforting message. They read these verses & generally say something like this: “GOD isn’t finished with me yet. He is making me into something beautiful.” As we shall see, there is absolutely some truth in this idea. But this was not the point that GOD was making to Judah. Instead, His message was still about judgment. The pot on the potter’s wheel was not meant to comfort the rebellious nation, it was meant to disturb them. Jeremiah’s message is actually about clay in the hands of an angry potter. GOD wanted His people to understand that He is sovereign, that He can do whatever He determines to do. Therefore, He not only can make you into a vessel of honor if you’ll submit to Him, but He can also destroy you for sin if you persist in rebellion. Simply put, GOD is the one who brought you into this world, & He can take you out of it. Unless we recognize this truth, we have not fully reckoned with the sovereignty of GOD nor understood the message given at the potter’s shop to Jeremiah.
