Living Water - Part 2
The Samaritan woman which Christ sought out had known nothing before this moment but a miserable chain of disappointing relationships. The fact that she had been married 5 times indicated that she had sought fulfillment in her life intensely but had not found it. I imagine that in her first marriage she thought she had found the love of her life, & at least on an emotional level, the newness of the relationship seemed to temporarily mask the loneliness of her soul. She expected the happiness to last her entire life. But something went wrong, the love disappeared, & she was left alone. Then came another man & the flame in her heart began to burn again, though not quite as passionately as before; but that flame also died down with time & eventually vanquished. Then came another … & another … & another … & another. Now she comes to the well at noon so she can avoid the sneers & scornful glances of the other woman who went to draw water at cooler times of the day. Her lifestyle had supplied plenty of material for the town gossip. She is worn down by her guilt & weary from the stigma she bears. There are very few slanderous words that have not been hurled at her by the people of Sychar. Above all, she is filled with a deep hunger & an inner thirst for something better, fulfilling, & lasting in life. And Jesus knows it, thus He sets on that well waiting to satisfy her soul.
