The Burning Fire In The Dark Night
Tonight, as we continue in our study of Jeremiah, we witness a shocking surprise of events. What started in a potter’s shop will land the prophet of GOD in a prison’s stocks. This chapter records a very low point in Jeremiah’s ministry as we shall see. The man to blame for Jeremiah’s anguish & pain was a priest named Pashhur. As chief governor of the temple, Pashhur was in charge of the temple security & assigned to maintain order in it. He had no doubt heard how that Jeremiah had dashed a clay pot to the ground in the Valley of Hinnom in front of the city’s elders & religious leaders (c.19). He also heard that Jeremiah was now preaching a message of judgment in the precincts of the temple. And the message of the prophet was that GOD was about to smash Jerusalem to smithereens. As far as Pashur was concerned, Jeremiah’s preaching sounded like treason; thus, he was filled with anger & decided to put an end to it.
